Stacey the turtle was found on Ripiro beach in Dargaville in September 2013 by a member of the public. When turtles wash up on the beach in NZ, it's because they are in bad shape, and Stacey was no different.
DOC transported her to Auckland, where the Auckland Zoo veterinary service team provided critical care. She was underweight, covered in algae, and very weak.
After about a week's care at the Zoo, Stacey was taken to Kelly Tarlton's, where in association with the Kelly Tarlton Marine Wildlife Trust, she was carefully nursed back to full strength and health - even spending some time in our main fish tank.
After completing vet checks which verified she was back to fighting fit, Stacey was released by the Kelly Tarlton's team in the Poor Knights Marine Reserve yesterday, so that she has the chance to potentially live for over a hundred more years in the oceans where she belongs.
We're honoured to be able to contribute to the long term survival of these endangered animals, and hope she lives a long and healthy life in the sea.
