SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton's Aquarium

Kelly Tarlton's supports Young Blake Expeditions

Sir Peter Blake was a world-class sailor who turned his attention to ocean exploration and raising awareness of marine conservation issues.

The Sir Peter Blake Trust is a not for profit organisation which carries on his work, and also aims to develop the next generation's leaders. Each year they run an expedition for young people who have shown interest in science, conservation and the environment - allowing them to take part in scientific, environmental, and heritage restoration projects throughout New Zealand, the Southern Ocean, the Sub-Antarctic Islands, and Antarctica.

The 2016 Expedition is to the Auckland Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site unique for its remoteness, incredible range of animal and plant life, and a marine sanctuary.

Kelly Tarlton's SEA LIFE Aquarium is giving one of its staff members the chance to assist on the voyage and support the expedition participants by providing marine science support. Interested staff applied in 2015, and the winning applicant, chosen by SPBT, was Harry Josephson-Rutter. Harry has been part of the curatorial team since February 2014, and in addition to his daily work looking after the creatures who call Kelly Tarlton's home, and supporing the sea turtle rehabilitation programme, is a keen diver and underwater photographer.

Harry will use the Sub-Antarctic Expedition to trial and collect 3D underwater footage of the Auckland Islands marine environment, which may be the first of its kind due to the remoteness of the area. Check back for updates on Harry's and rest of the Sir Peter Blake Trust Expedition Team.
