Profile - Spider Crab

Southern Spider Crab

This Spider crab, also sometimes known as the Auckland Islands crab, varies in colour from brick red to yellowish brown with bright red blotches on its claws. The male grows much larger than the female, and together with its long clawed legs of up to 40cm can have a total spread approaching 1 metre.

Adult and juvenile Southern Spider Crabs are very spiny and can be identified by their three pairs of very long walking legs. Adults will mate in shallow water in early springtime, before moving to deeper water.

Sealions and large fish are the main predators of Southern Spider Crabs.
