Gentoo Penguins

Gentoo penguins are the third largest out of the 17 species of penguins.

Profile Gentoo

Gentoo Penguins

Our Gentoo penguins weigh between 5 and 7kgs each and are about 75 -90cm tall. This is the same as Gentoos in the wild. A Gentoo is easily recognised by the wide white stripe extending like a bonnet across the top of its head. They have a lifespan of 17-22 years, usually longer in captivity.

In the wild, Gentoo penguins range from the sub-Antarctic Islands, right down to the Antarctic Peninsula. Kelly Tarlton's is the only place in New Zealand with a Gentoo penguin breeding program. The birds are listed as "near threatened" on the World Conservation Union (IUCN) Red List.
