Meet our Staff - Birdo's

Laura Seaman – Penguin Department

My role:

I'm the Team Leader of the Penguin Department, which involves managing the day to day care of the penguins and the maintenance of their enclosure.

Career path:

I have always had a keen interest in animals and therefore studied a Bachelor of Science majoring in Biological Science at University. After graduating in 2003, I applied for the job vacancy that arose within The Penguin Department at Kelly Tarlton’s. I started out as an Avicultural Assistant, and have since been promoted to Team Leader.

Most enjoyable part of my role:

The penguins - there is always something different going on with them, whether it be eggs, chicks, moult or courtship. It's always fun and interesting.

Most memorable moment:

Helping one of our penguins hatch out a young King chick whose egg had been crushed - I had assisted in this process so that the King chick could successfully hatch out of the egg. Once given the clear, we were able to give the chick back to his parents to raise. Being part of his survival process and watching him grow since, is amazing!
