Kelly Tarlton’s Conservation Initiatives:

As an aquarium, Kelly Tarlton’s acknowledges the importance of leadership by example and has grown increasingly aware of the need for our business to demonstrate corporate responsibility and to function at an environmentally friendly level.

Kelly Tarlton’s has therefore constructed initiatives such as the Turtle Rehabilitation Programme, The Green Team, and beach clean ups, to ensure this ensues.

Green Team

The Green team comprises of a member from each department who meet monthly to discuss issues of sustainability and ways in which the business could improve its ‘ecological footprint’.

Since the establishment of the Green Team, Kelly Tarlton’s has taken significant steps towards reducing its waste, pollution, and energy consumption, and continues to find ways to improve this.

As a result, Kelly Tarlton’s is proud to be ‘Kiwi Green’ certified as of January 2009. To view our Qualmark Enviro Gold listing, please visit http://www.qualmark.co.nz/account.php?a=AQF8AA000431.

Turtle Rehabilitation Programme:

There are 7 species of marine turtles found in New Zealand’s waters, all of which are classed as endangered, with some being on the verge extinction. Kelly Tarlton’s has voluntarily established a turtle rehabilitation programme and each year we receive sick turtles that have either been battered in storms or hurt in incidences such as boat strikes and shark attacks. Exhausted and suffering from hypothermia, the turtles are often swept on to the beach and rescued by members of the public. Our curation team place them in special rehabilitation tubs to warm their body temperature and give them food and medication to restore them back to health. Once they are strong enough, they are released back into the ocean.

Their progress is often monitored with satellite transmitter tags, which helps researchers learn about the migration routes of these species. Over 30 marine turtles have been rehabilitated at Kelly Tarlton’s since the 1980’s.

Beach Clean ups

Kelly Tarlton’s organises regular beach clean ups around our local foreshore, and both Kelly Tarlton’s staff as well as friends and family are known to get involved. These have been very successful in the past, and have resulted in a significant amount of waste been picked up and recycled.

Interested in participating? Check back here to see when our next beach clean up is scheduled for.
